Sorry for your loss. We (RPCVs) were gathered in Buffalo, NY this first week of January 2008 sharing crazy Spee stories.... The late night jams and discussions in rain storms that beat upon the metal roofs.... What an amazing experience. I am sorry to read that Spee has died. I am also upset that I have lost touch with the people of Cameroon, my beloved home for two years. My belated condolences to friends and family.

He is gone, but he is here! I came to know Nzante Spee in Cameroun where I worked from 1992 - 1996 as advisor to the Ministry of Environment; I appreciated his personality, his engagement for nature protection and for building human relations. At the end of my assignment in Cameroun I engaged him to produce a painting on environmental protection for the Ministry of Environment (UNDP Project). Unfortunately I cannot find any photo of this painting but I sill have many of his works at home, some of which I\'m now putting on sale. He lives on through his work and through his spirit that he expressed in his paintings – as in his paintings, he might be sometimes looking down on us. Joachim

I was so shcked when I learnt of Spee\'s passing away.I still remember him fondly - while I was still in Bamenda(Abakwa as he was fond of calling his town),I often visited him at his studios at Ghana Street and below the Baptist Church. We would sit and talk and talk about his paintings and his music and his projects.:One last thing I remember him telling me was his frustration at the fact that the Cameroon government through its Ministry of Culture had a bias against him by not giving him access to attend expositions abroad where he is invited and deserves to be but instaed they give the opportunities to mediocre francophone artists whom they favor.It\'s very touching when I think of it. On a lighter mode,I still remember his bright multicolored convertible beetle he had.He used to fill it with friends, sometimes tourists who visited him and they would go out to town for a booze. Spee,I see you everywhere through your many works of art. I wonder what happened to one of his sons I met at his studio the last time I went there, many yeras ago - he was just a small boy then. Spee forever!!!

It was with sadness that I read about Mr. Nzante\'s death on this iste. Nzante was a schoolmate at JMBC in the mid-sixties to the aerly seventies. He was a natural artist. At that time he was very talented. He taught himself to play a guitar and made his own steel drum and could play any type of music. I have always wondered whatever happened to him since we left Ndu in 1971. Cameroon has lost a child prodigy in arts. He was young, gifted Cameroonian. I will like to get some of his paintings if his studio in Bamenda is still operating. I can be contacted by e-mail.
- John E. Abunaw(e-mail:johebaw@aol.com)

I first met you in Buea in 1971 and later in 1978 in Abidjan. You were always warm, charming, energetic and engaging. Ever ready to entertain with your guitar or your pencil and charcoal sketches, back then. Your energy was infectious and very uplifting. Your optimism, unsurpassed. Your art, inspiring and destined to greatness. My memories of these fine qualities of yours have not faded with time, even after we lost contact with each other in 1978. Indeed, it is these memories and my firm knowledge that you will be a great artist that led me to try to reconnect with you through the internet. I searched eBay for your art. Those searches resulted in no hits until this day, 12/24/06. The one hit today led me to this site. Only then did I find out, my dear friend, you had left us. Gone, you are, but your spirit lives on in me and many others who came in contact with you. I remember you laughter like yesterday. As I look at your picture on this site I see that timeless smile, ever present and heart- warming. I also see that fire in your eyes, the light of your eternal optimism reaching out to touch humanity. I am glady to have known you and will forever cherish our time together and the memories associated with it. Live on, my dear friend. Live on.

Hey Spee. The coolest days of my life were the days with Charlo when we used to come from Bafut. I decided to honor those days by picking up painting too. Best of wishes with your work. Jude

Spee, my man, you really touched me, welcoming me into your home and introducing me to your family, your friends, your town... your painting was the best wedding gift I could have ever given... your words and actions will always remain in my memory as cherished... rest in peace, friend, and send some inspiration our way once in a while, so that we too may create some of the creative, powerful beauty that you spread so generously throughout the world.

Nzante was my student when I taught at Merrick Baptist College in Ndu, and he was a talented artist even then. Some of his early drawings are framed in my home, and hold an honored place on my walls and in my heart. Tony Boatman, Former PCV Boise, Idaho USA

It is hard to learn that Spee is dead. However, I LOVE DEATH because it brings to an end the injustice and suffering imposed on a soul, and on the other hand it creats lengends. As an artist coming from Cameroon I feel very sad for the vacume Spee\'s disappearance creats among artists and those aspiring to become one. Anyway he touched lives and trained may artists, and I know he is reaping the benefits where ever God has placed him. I wish his soul perfect peace and courage to go on with life. FC Mallo Artist. *Lifelong Friendship* We lived in the same MUGHEB Quarter, Nkwen, Bamenda. I first met with the regretted Spee when we were kids and attending the then Cameroon Baptist Mission (CBM)School, Mugheb, Nkwen, Bamenda. We have since been friends. His sudden departure has caused us terrible grief. He was very, very soft and friendly. His smile was like the harbenger and a solace of perfect peace. And a friend indeed! We miss him a lot and pray for the peace of his soul. May he rest in perfect peace. From Tam Neba, Cell 237 762-2644.

We\'ve missed the famous greeting: \"Booogie! Yeeah. How di go? Di go di go\". As we hope to receive this warm greeting the day we meet him in the world beyond, his works will always remind us to \"open our minds\" and embrace the concept of \'one love\'. Jah help us bear this great loss.

Spee belongs now to the pantheon of great human beings. He would come into my classroom to share his paintings but we recieved more, we became witness to that tangible spirut that reminds us to truly live. Spee\'s music, paintings, and most of all his example is alive. I am blessed to have been called his freind. Adios a un gran amigo.

Brother Spee, We would have loved to immortalized a rare artist of your aclibre were we not human. Luckily, you immortalized yourself for us through your great art. You will forever be in our midst. May your soul RIP. Love, Henry Kari Waco-Texas, USA.

I had heard the name Spee before I met the versatile artist behind the name and his breathtaking pictures on exhibition at the Goethe Institut in Yaounde. I was still marvelling at the finesse revealed through the works, when another acquaintance made me know they were my fellow \"country man\'s \" and took me to him. The rest followed quite naturally for all who ever met Spee ... the jokes, the laughter, the incisive artistic discussions, the giving. We could only next meet at the Spee Art Center when it came up and time allowed, and he and I went through the whole centre, as he designed on a tee-shirt here, corrected a learner there, strumped at his guitar and filled the atmosphere with the joy of creative living. We agreed I was going to work with him towards putting some of his art and life into print... would time and place allow? An artist of his calibre never dies - no, he has just finished off the greatest masterpiece of the Original Creator\'s art by melting into one of the Melting Age pictures some of which I watch him vividly paint ever so well. May your remains lowered on our soils be a nursery of the stunning talent you possessed!
- Anderson Funfe

May the soul of Spee rest in perfect peace. His works, talents ,joy, friendship will never be leave us. I spoke to Spee 5 days before the cruel hands of death called him home. We make plans but the right plans come from the almighty. One of Spee\'s most loved works hands in my sitting room and his memory is with us. He is a great loss for Mbem and Cameroon as a whole!!!
- Dr. Alfred N. Funteh

When I met Spee I was equally impressed with his artwork, his incredible energy, and his work within his community in Bamenda. He will be missed.
- Greg Pelly

Mr. Spee\'s work is AMAZING, an inspiration. He will be deeply missed.
- Misse

We will miss you and your paintings will stay with us forever as a reminding
- annick godeau

I met Spee the evening he arrived in California from Cameroon. A group of us went out to celebrate his arrival, but he seemed exhausted at best and had little to say to us. He sat humbly, awaiting our return home. When we did return home an entirely new man emerged, discarded his fatigue and he quickly took up his guitar and a glass of wine. That was it; after that it was electric. Music, stories, joking and laughing. At that moment I felt like Acis meeting Dionysus for the first time. Wine and song filled our little house and there was no reprieve from that laughter that made our bodies ache. Carousing till early morning, we shared in Spee\'s sacrament to the spirit of life. In his perpetual sacrament of expression and celebration he passed that spirit to us all. Eternal and irrepressible his gift made us more aware of ourselves and all the things we should be thankful for. That awareness will make me miss him, but it will also inspire me to share his precious gift with all those around me.
- Laurent de Santa Cruz

I met Spee at an Artist Exhhibit. There was great music and we danced and danced!
- Marcia Stein

It was with a sense of shock when I opened Spee‘s homepage this morning. I stayed in Minnesota in late May and knew that Spee had left Bamenda last year to go „somewhere“ as a friend from there described it. On May 25th I knew that he was in Stockton. I still vividly remember when we first met in 1996. He explained his latest works of art with indepth and full of energy. Spee had a great persomality being a friend to all who met him. He was open, honest, giving, and inviting. He came to see me on the occasion of an exhibition in Yaoundé in April 2003 just before I left Cameroon. He was full of ideas, projects. I cherish a photo of him and then his youngest daugther Sparky with the dedication which reads: With all my best wishes for the better future. Please accept this expression of my heartfelt sympathy and regret for that loss. If there is anything at all I can do to ligthen the present burden of the family I should feel priviledged to do so. Spee\'s memory lives through his works and through devoted friends. I had hoped to meet him again. We all will greatly miss him.
- Hannelore Knott, Berlin/Germany, resident in Cameroon from 1996 to 2003

he inspired me so much, he was the only one who could see my true talent in art. now i am going to give him a late painting that i did for me to put on his grave.
- Georgette

Though my meeting with Spee was brief, he left me and my family with lasting memmories not just of his art but his simple humanity and his spirit of appreciation of others. We in San Jose/Stockton CA where he spent his last days will Greatly miss him. There will be a wake keeping at my residence in San Jose CA on 6-04-05 @ 6-9pm for us as fellow Cameroonians and \"Friends of Nzante Spee\" to pay him our last respects. Please call me at (408)687-0996 if you will like to be a part of this occasion.
- GEORGE NWAFOR

I am truly sorry to hear of the passing of Brother Spee. I still remember the good moment and the laughter that filled the house when he came around in 2001. When death strikes memories just flash back. The good Lord will continue to watch over his family. I know it is hard for us human to understand, but trust God knows best. Our thought and prayers will be with the entire family during this difficult time. The Lord God has plans for each and every one of us. It was his time and we have to continue to pray for his Soul to rest in peace.
- Bri Chomilo

Sunday Nzante was from my area, Nwa Subdivision. He was my classmate in Joseph Merrick Baptist College, Ndu, Cameroon. He was loved by all who came in contact with him, because he was a charming dramatist as well as a true artist. He was multi-talented and very creative in such a manner that he wrote his own songs and created his own arts. He had numerous exhibitions in Africa, Europe and America. We have lost a true champion of arts. The last time I visited with him in Cameroon in 2002, he entertained me with several of his songs as we had not seen each other in more than 15 years! I will ever miss his friendship and as a fellow countryman. May his soul rest in peace. Manasses Yunmbam, Maryland USA
- Dr. Manasses Yunmbam

To those who had the privilege of knowing Spee from childhood as I did, this is truly a loss. The world of arts has lost a multi-talented and gifted member. Spee\'s memory lives through his works and through devoted friends like Tih Aloysius and his family in Cameroon. Spee, rest in peace and know we will always miss you.
- Chris Chomilo, Minnesota USA
